Client Services

The hospital at Saratoga Equine Veterinary Service is staffed to meet the emergency, preventative or maintenance medical care that your horse needs. Our hospital is located in Saratoga Springs, in Upstate New York (about 40 minutes north of Albany) and serves as a referral center for our own ambulatory clients and for veterinarians in the surrounding New York and Western New England area. While our five veterinarians maintain a busy ambulatory schedule, clients are welcome to trailer their horses to the clinic for treatment as well.

SURGERY

Staff surgeons Harold (Bill) Barnes, D.V.M., M.S., and Axel Sondhof D.V.M., M.S., along with our emergency clinician and support staff, are prepared 24-hours a day, seven days a week to perform emergency surgical procedure, including colic surgery. Additionally, both surgeons perform soft-tissue and orthopedic procedures including arthroscopy for our own clients and clients referred to us by other veterinarians. Our doctors work closely with referring practitioners in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care of the patients operated on at SEVS. Because of our close proximity to the Saratoga Race Course, visiting surgeons may conduct surgical procedures at our hospital as well.

INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

The SEVS intensive care unit team is comprised of a carefully trained group of individuals dedicated to the well-being of each and every patient they monitor. Our ICU is located within the SEVS Hospital Barn and is equipped with respiratory support, automatic fluid delivery pumps and a dedicated team of clinicians and carefully trained technicians. Our ICU team is supported by a veterinarian who lives on the premises and maintains visual contact with members of the ICU attendants and the patients through a video monitoring system. The veterinarian is available to our attendants at a moment's notice, should the need arise. Our 8-stall hospital barn includes oversized stalls for mares with foals. Additionally, the hospital barn houses a separate wing with two stalls for isolation cases in which specific procedures are followed to ensure the healthiest environment for all of our hospital patients at all times.

MEDICAL/DIAGNOSTIC EXAMINATION CAPABILITIES

At Saratoga Equine our physicians are aided in their medical evaluations by a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic tools. Either for lameness, pre-purchase exams or medical issues, the veterinarians are assisted by ultrasound, shockwave and digital radiography machines. We also conduct video endoscopic examinations of the upper-airway and stomach. Also, our hospital is home to a high-powered 500 MA radiograph machine which allows our physicians to radiograph chest, spine and pelvis areas in adult horses. In order to better serve our patients, SEVS continually evaluates and updates our medical equipment.

LABORATORY SERVICES

A comprehensive laboratory located in the clinic at SEVS is used for hematology, blood gases, serum chemistry and bacteriology results. The on-site laboratory allows clinicians and referring veterinarians access to test results 24-hours a day to aid in rapid responses to medical emergencies and in surgery. Our hospital also relies upon the good work of other laboratories, such as at Cornell, for other test results. Samples are sent overnight to be analyzed, with results returned via fax to our veterinarians, for the quickest possible response.

AMBULATORY

Our doctors take care of a diverse horse population in their ambulatory practices. Traveling within a 30-mile radius of Saratoga Springs, our team of veterinarians come to your farm for a variety of your horses' needs: seasonal vaccinations, lameness and pre-purchase exams, minor surgical procedures, emergencies, foaling assistance and more. Our patients include thoroughbred racehorses, polo ponies, backyard equine friends, rodeo horses, hunter jumpers and others.

To maintain a tight schedule and to reach all of our clients in a timely fashion, our office staff works diligently to keep our doctors on the road and on time. We know that your schedule is important to you, and while we can not avoid the emergencies that interrupt our doctors' schedules (and yours) we pledge to communicate any delays to you as soon as we know that they are unavoidable.
