Package #1
Includes:
“Vaccine boosters” $52
Potomac Horse Fever vaccine
Rhino vaccine
Fecal recheck for parasites
Lyme Snap Blood screening test
Purchased separately, this is a $112 value!
This package applies to any horse whose most recent PHF and Rhino vaccine was administered at least three months ago (both vaccines have a short duration of protection). PHF is seasonal and we see the highest amount of cases in July and August. Boostering the Rhino is recommended due to recent outbreaks of Rhino in other states.
A fecal recheck to determine if a wormer should be administered over the summer is good preventative healthcare for any horse. Some horses may need to be wormed in spring/summer/fall, or some may only need spring/fall depending on their parasite load.
The Lyme/Anaplasmosis screening test can apply to any horse, but especially those horses that may show early signs of Lyme Disease: irritability, stiffness, dullness, or change in attitude. Many horses in this area have been exposed to Lyme Disease from a tick bite. For horses testing positive, a more definitive blood test can be sent to Cornell to confirm that the patient needs treatment.
Package #2
Includes:
“Dental package” $125
Dental
Tranquilization for the dental
Fecal recheck for parasites
Lyme Snap Blood screening test
Purchased separately this is a $185 value!
This package applies to any horse whose last dental exam and procedure was more than a year ago. It also applies to those horses for whom we recommended a dental procedure when we checked their teeth while doing spring vaccines. See package #1 for
explanations on Lyme and fecal.

SEVS 2010 Update
This year SEVS celebrated its 10th Anniversary. It was a year of exciting changes that we want to share with you and that we hope has made your relationship with your horses healthier and more enjoyable.
Over the past year we introduced a series of well-attended client education seminars and equine wellness packages. Doctors last year spoke on Lyme Disease, parasites, colic (costs, complications and causes) and nutrition. We are expecting to continue these seminars thru 2011 featuring exciting and new topics. All of the presentations were conducted at our clinic location and can be viewed on our website, www.saratogaequine.com , under “News”. We appreciate your participation in these seminars, and also to those who took advantage of gastroscope clinic that we offered, free of charge, at a boarding facility in Charlton. Horse owners watched as a scope was passed through to their horses’ stomach to look for ulcers. For spring vaccines we added a benefit for horses and owners with a Spring Vaccine Wellness Package that included a free fecal examination tested at our hospital.
In advanced education news for our veterinarians, Dr. Julie Cornell attended the North America Veterinary Conference in the winter. Dr. Sandy attended the Northeast Association of Equine Practitioners with emphasis on equine reproduction in the fall. Most recently, Dr. Bill Barnes attended the annual American Association of Equine Practitioners symposium. Dr. Barnes was also a featured speaker at the 2010 Saratoga Horse Symposium, and SEVS sponsored a booth at the event.. Dr. Barnes presented his talk on Lyme Disease. With the local show season beginning, SEVS has been a proud sponsor of many of the local show venues.
As we strive to stream-line all the latest equine news that comes to us and forward it on to you, we launched our new SEVS new website and also signed on to a SEVS Facebook page. Along that same electronic vain, we appreciate your providing us with your email addresses so that we can reach you as we “go green.”
Summer at SEVS is always busy, and the summer of 2010 was no exception. Our medical staff was enhanced by a group of talented and engaged externs who worked diligently in one- two- or three- week stints to enhance their education. We appreciate their hard work and hope that you had the pleasure to meet some of them as you stopped by the hospital. Our externs last summer came from as far away as Ireland, Canada and Australia. It is our objective to help help in the process of educating future equine veterinarians and we look forward to bringing in a new troupe of externs this coming summer.
In staff developments, Dr. Cornell (a 2009 graduate of Kansas State and our 2009-2010 intern) evolved from a hard-working and talented intern, to a hard-working and talented associate veterinarian. We have one name-change this year with Dr. Sandy Tatarynw becoming Dr. Sandy Tasse. Congratulations, Sandy, on your beautiful July, 2010 wedding.
One of the most visible changes that you might notice when visiting the hospital now-a-days, is that on the north side of the property there is a scurry of activity during school hours. A part of the property is being shared with the Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex Counties BOCES Equine Studies Program. Education is an important aspect of our practice whether it is continuing education for our doctors and staff, horse owners, or local high school students. Along with the BOCES program, each year we welcome high school students who participate in New Visions Program through their local high school to observe the hands-on work of our doctors and veterinary technicians.
One of our most rewarding activities of the is our horse show, held in the fall to benefit the Double H Ranch in Lake Luzerne. This year we are proud to report that we hosted our 3rd Annual Saratoga Equine Fall Horse Show; another huge success. We were very fortunate to have had so many sponsors to benefit such a great cause. We look foward to our upcoming show scheduled for the Fall, 2011.
As we strive to be the best equine ambulatory and emergency surgical hospital in the area, we continue to invest in the latest equipment available, and to educate our own doctors. To that end, we purchased a new digital radiograph unit which allows us to now have two units available.
It was a very busy and exciting year for us, indeed, and of course, we would not be here without you. We wish you a happy and healthy new year to each of you and each of your equine friends. Visit us at 63 Henning Road, or at www.saratogaequine.com or on Facebook.
We welcome the new year as we continue to provide excellent veterinary care to our patients, and we are most thankful for your faith in us to provide the best possible care for your horses 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Don't forget to schedule your horse's fall vaccines!
Why get fall vaccines?
Not all vaccines are protective for one year. Some will wane in immunity after a couple of months, and your horse will no longer be protected against infection:
Flu/Rhino = 6 month duration
PHF = 3-4 month duration
EWT = 6 month duration (Eastern/Western Encephalitis)
Some of the above diseases you horse can get from the environment, and does not need exposure to other horses to become infected: E/W Encephalitis is mosquito transmitted, PHF is from the injection of flies and snails.
This year, in addition to the regular Flu/Rhino & PHF boosters, we are recommending EWT (3 way vax) for the Eastern Encephalitis (EE).
Fact on EE: Michigan was 130 cases this year with only five horses surviving. It is a mosquito born, often deadly disease that causes fever and neurological signs. There has been a reported case of EE in NY this year, as well as three in Massachusetts.
One more bonus of fall vaccines:
A free fecal is also included in the package. In order to tailor your worming program to your horse to limit excessive use of dewormers that can cause resistance, manure should be checked several times a year for parasite eggs.
Please call our office to schedule an appointment.
This year's horse show was another great success. We had twenty riders participate in a day of fun, food and great prizes from our raffle. Each rider earned ribbons, and we awarded a Champion and Reserved Champion in our Novice, Intermediate and Senior divisions. All proceeds will be donated to Double H Ranch in Lake Luzerne.
We would like to thank our sponsors for the their overwhelming support: Cheshire Horse, Muck Movers, LLC, Rider's Crossing Tack and Apparel, Thorobred Feed, Price Chopper, Hannaford, Boehringer Ingelheim, Butler Schein Animal Health, Milburn Equine, JTSports Photography, William J. Dyer & Sons, Purina Feeds, Helping Hands Equine Massage and Spa Alpacas.
Also a special thanks to all the riders, parents, instructors, volunteers and judges for making this a special day once again. Please check back for details for next year's horse show in October, 2011.
There has been a confirmed case of a horse that was diagnosed with Eastern Equine Encephalits in Oswego County according the Department of Agriculture and Markets.
Mosquitoes carrying this virus were found in both Oswego County, northwestern Oneida County and Madison County.
If your horse(s) has not been vaccinated for this virus, please contact our office. Our 2010 Spring Vaccine package consisted of this vax as a combination with Western Encephalits, Tetanus and West Nile Virus. Symptons to look for are staggering, circling, depression, loss of appetite, sometimes fever and blindness. Precautions including emptying standing water, using bug spray and keeping horses out of mosquito infested areas from dusk to dawn. If you have any further questions, please contact us.
Just a reminder of the next educational seminar scheduled for September 22 about colic, "The 3 C's...Causes, Costs & Complications". It will be at our clinic beginning at 6:00 PM.
It's time to schedule SPRING VACCINES for your equine friends. SEVS is offering a special wellness exam with reduced vaccine prices that can be tailored specifically to the needs of your horse.
FEBRUARY 1 TO MARCH 31: The wellness visit includes Rabies, EWT/WNV, Flu/Rhino vaccinations, fecal exam dental exam, nutritional counseling and a tube of Ivermectin wormer=$87.00! Coggins during this period is $25.00; a reduced price.
By vaccinating horses in one area on certain days, we are able to reduce our call charges to $9.00 per owner if there are four owners in the area. With five to ten owners, the call charge is $4.00, and with ten or more owners, there is NO call charge.
CALL US TO SCHEDULE: 583-7273. It is the goal of SEVS to always have a healthly relationship with you and your horse. SATURDAY APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE!
On Saturday, March 13, Saratoga Equine traveled to Second Chance Farm in Charlton to perform gastroscopes on horses that were suspect of having ulcers. Dr. Barnes and Dr. Van Dyke of Merial worked together to sedate the horse, pass the scope allowing the horse owner to see inside their horse's stomach. At that point, they could see if the horse currently had ulcers or may have had them in the past on a video monitor. Despite the cold, damp weather (as March in upstate New York usually is), it was a fun day of learning and discussing what may cause gastric ulcers, how to diagnose them, treatment and prevention.
We would like to thank the organizers at Merial, Second Chance Farm, horses owners and their horses for participating. We hope to offer another clinic in the future. If you have any questions regarding gastric ulcers, please contact our office.
Saratoga Equine will be offering a series of short courses starting in the spring pertaining to equine health. Topics presented are nutrition, parasites, lyme disease and colic. These courses will be held at our clinic on 63 Henning Road. Owners will attend an informative session that features these individual topics and an open forum for questions and answers. There is no charge to attend and light refreshments will be served. Please check back for dates. If you are interested in a particular topic, please send us an e-mail to let us know your thoughts.
Saratoga Equine will be hosting the annual Saratoga Equine Veterinary Service Fall Horse Show in October. This is the third year for the horse show. All proceeds are donated to the Double H Ranch. Class divisions will consist of lead line (ages 7 and under), novice (ages 8-10), intermediate (ages 11-14) and senior (ages 15-18). Check back for details on our website.
